TeenInfoNet had the opportunity to do an exclusive interview with Marshall Williams. Marshall plays the role of Albert Banks in the Disney Channel Original Movie ‘How to Build a Better Boy,’ be sure to check out our exclusive Q&A interview with Marshall Williams below!
1. Can you tell us about yourself? I’m a Canadian actor, originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba. At heart I’m a country kid and I’ve been living in Toronto and Los Angeles the last few years for work. I love football, hockey, playing guitar and singing in my down time.
2. When did you go into acting? It’s kind of a weird story how I got into acting. After high school I was really into football and was playing for the University of Manitoba. At the same time, I was dared by some team mates to try out for Canadian Idol. So, I tried out, got to the Top 40 and then got cut. But, while I was in Toronto, I met some modelling agencies and ended up signing with Ford Models. I started auditioning for commercials through Ford and realized I really loved preforming. I started taking classes, found an agent and began auditioning for TV shows and movies. From there the rest is history. But I still get called “Kelly Clarkson” from my old teammates.
3. For those who don’t know about your new movie “How to Build a Better Boy”, can you give us a brief description? How to Build a Better Boy is a Disney Channel Original Movie about two tech-savvy high school girls, Mae Hartley (Kelli Berglund) and Gabby Harrison (China McClain), that come up with a plan to make the perfect boyfriend. Unbeknown to them is that the computer they used is actually designed to create a robotic super soldier. So, Gabby and Mae unintentionally create the macho, yet sensitive, super cute boy, Albert.
4. Who else stars in the movie with you? In the movie, ‘Mae Hartley’ is played by Kelli Berglund and ‘Gabby Harrison’ is played by China McClain. Matt Shively plays ‘Mae’s’ older brother ‘Bart Hartley’, Ashley Argota plays ‘Nevaeh Barnes’, and Noah Centineo plays ‘Jaden Stark’.
5. Do you relate to your character Albert in any way? I wish I could be as awesome as Albert, he’s good at everything and everyone loves him. I think that I can relate to him in the sense that he has a variety of different talents. I can’t tell you what they are yet, but we definitely share a few.
6. Did you have to audition for your role? And if so, what was the process like? I think the total amount of auditions were four. There were three in Toronto and one in Los Angeles. In my first audition I was actually reading for ‘Jaden’ but I was asked to read for Albert for the call backs.
7. What was the first thing you did when you found out you landed the role of Albert? I think the first thing I did was kiss my girlfriend and call home. I was super excited to get the role and be in a DCOM.
8. Albert is built to be a “perfect boyfriend” but what do you believe makes a “perfect boyfriend?” A perfect boyfriend is one that loves the person their with, understands them, supports them, and helps them become the person they want to be.
9. Did you have to do any special training to look like “super soldier?” I try to keep in as best shape as I can so I just had to keep up the training I was doing. I did have to get some specific training for certain scenes in the movie though.
10. Do you have any favorite on set memories? I can’t remember any specific moments but everyday we shot was a blast. The cast and crew were awesome to work with and it never actually felt like work.
11. What did you and the other actors do while you weren’t filming? While we weren’t filming we hung out a lot. Went for coffees, dinners, movies and a Toronto Argonauts game.
12. What was the hardest part while filming? I think the hardest part while filming was doing Alberts stunts. They were pretty physically demanding and I did all of them except one. I wish I could have done the one I didn’t but I would have needed special training to perform it.
13. Are you currently working on any other projects? There are a few projects on the go right now with Disney and some pilots that I hope get green lighted. Other than that I’m always playing guitar, singing, and writing.
14. What is your favorite genre of movies to be in and why? I’d say my favorite genre of movies to be in are action based. Although the shooting is physically demanding, its always fun to do and rewarding at the end.
15. Do you have any advise for anyone planning on going into acting? The best piece of advice I could offer to people getting into acting is to not get discouraged and always be true to yourself. Keep learning,  developing your work and don’t give up if it’s something you want. If you love what you do, you’ll be happy and successful.
16. Do you have any social media sites where we can find you? You can find me on Twitter at @theMarshallW and Instagram at @themarshallwilliams.
