Lorde Performs Two Hit Songs At MMVAs — Photos Here!!

Because only Lorde can wear a big floppy hat, dark lipstick, lay on the floor holding a lamp, and still look cool!  Lorde graced us with an amazing mashup performance of her two hit songs, “Team” and “Tennis Court” at the Much Music Video Awards tonight.  It seems as though the lamp shade is a personal favorite for Lorde and we can’t say we didn’t love it as she fell to the floor with it during “Team.”

Earlier this month Lorde admitted that her second studio album would be much different than “Pure Heroine.”  Different or not, we are looking forward to more from this young star!

Lorde Covers May’s ‘Teen Vogue,’ Fangirls Over Hilary Duff Like The Rest Of Us — Get A First Look!

Lorde may have rocketed to superstardom seemingly overnight, but she’s not buying into Hollywood standards of beauty — and that might be why she’s our favorite Teen Vogue cover girl yet! The 17 year-old singer-songwriter from New Zealand has kept it real in the face of Photoshop — going so far as to call out airbrush-happy photo retouchers on Twitter for nixing the blemishes on her face during a live performance recently — and maintaining her own personal style and down-to-Earth attitude despite all her success.

In the May cover story — on newsstands April 29 — Lorde talks everything from busting industry standards to what she was like growing up in a suburb of Auckland… and even fangirls over Hilary Duff in the process. It’s a nice reminder that even though she’s a household name now, she’s still just like the rest of us.

Check out some excerpts from the Teen Vogue article and a sneak peek of the awesome photo shoot below now:

Cover Star Lorde Opens up About Everything: Overnight Success, Juggling Fame, and Being a Real-Girl Role Model by Andrew Bevan

“Hilary Duff? Are you freaking serious? Hilary Duff was there last night? This is what dreams are made of! Was she vibing it? Was she bobbing her head?” asks 17-year-old Ella Yelich-O’Connor, better known by her music moniker, Lorde, after I reveal that the former Disney star stood next to me during the singer’s private performance the previous night. It’s Grammy weekend in Los Angeles, and we’re sitting on a sun-drenched West Hollywood rooftop that’s perfectly juxtaposed with Ella’s black-clad, neo-nineties aesthetic. She seems blithely unaware of the fact that she is the music world’s current It girl and that everyone, and I mean everyone, is clamoring for her. And that her album is soon to go platinum, and that in less than 48 hours, she’s not only going to perform at the Grammys, where she’s nominated for four awards, but she’s also going to take home two as souvenirs. Miss Yelich-O’Connor is too preoccupied with the fact that Lizzie McGuire told me between songs that she’s enamored with Ella’s lioness mane. “This is the most insane thing that’s ever happened to me,” Ella exclaims, pushing back her trademark locks (which she says she hasn’t cut in seven years). “That’s my childhood right there. Hilary Duff is a fan—that freaks me out!”

While the world is quick to label this wise-beyond-her-years songstress as a gothic, moody punk girl, it’s clear she is also (if you can believe it) a well-adjusted, non-jaded everyday teen. “There are a lot of expectations in this industry about looking a certain way and having a certain kind of appeal,” she says. “I am feminine, but I really love dressing in boys’ clothes too. I guess that’s why I get labeled as ‘the grumpy girl,’ because I don’t play into that.” Such self-awareness, humility, and, yes, even awkwardness are usually seen as a PR nightmare, but they’ve proven to be the very things that set Lorde apart from other breakout artists. “Believe me, it’s not lost on me. This time last year, I had never put new music out,” she says with a smirk, as if she, of all people, is most surprised by her sudden household-name status…

Read the rest of the article sneak peek on Teen Vogue’s site here!

On choosing her stage name: “I wanted a name that had something to do with aristocracy,” Lorde says of her music moniker. “And then I wrote the word and linked it. I liked the weird juxtaposition between it being masculine and tough sounding with a soft, feminine feel in the end.”

On her ever-evolving taste: “Every few months, I take the posters off my walls,” she says. “I’m like, ‘How did I like this stuff two months ago?'”

On the music in her blood: “Everyone in my family sings and I think that’s awesome. My sister [India Yelich-O’Connor] has gotten a really good response,” she says. “I’m happy for her.”

On social media: “I like Twitter because it’s a good direct link to people. You just reach out to someone you like and say, ‘Follow me please, and then we can talk,'” she says. “I really like Instagram as well. It’s a good one, very simple. I’m also on Facebook and Tumblr.”

On being Girls’ ultimate girl: “I finally watched Girls a couple of days ago and I loved it,” she says. “I tweeted Lena Dunham and she was like, ‘You’re the dream audience.’ I really appreciated that. I was like, ‘ahh!'”

On busting out her shell: “I spent so much time in my room before. I’m out in the world a lot more now,” Lorde says. “I have real-life interactions frequently. It’s amazing.”
